Real Bride Interviews – Kristen Classi

“Love is a partnership of two unique people who bring out the very best in each other, and who know that even though they are wonderful as individuals, they are even better together.” – Barbara Cage

I recently spoke to Kristen Classi, a 26-year-old product manager for Ralph Lauren, and bride-to-be, who shared some anecdotes and advice about becoming engaged and navigating through the wild world of wedding planning.JLM Couture JH8714 She became engaged to her boyfriend of over two years, Tony, in December 2012. Tony, a customs agent from New York City, proposed to Kristen in true New York fashion by popping the question in one of city’s most celebrated destinations.JLM Couture AV9712

How did you meet your fiancé?
We were actually set up by mutual friends a few years back. I remember the night I was going to meet him, I was so nervous! I had arrived first and I will never forget watching him pull up. He got out of his car and everything was in slow motion, almost out of a scene of a movie (so cheesy, I know), but I have to admit it was no doubt love at first sight.

How long did you date before you became engaged?
We dated for about 2 ? years

How did Tony pop the question?
He took me for a walk in Central Park around Christmas time. We were supposed to meet up with a friend of his who was ice skating with his family at Wollman Rink. He had stopped and asked a family passing by if they could take a picture of us. Before I knew it, he was down on his knee.

What has been the biggest stressor so far in the wedding planning process?
One word, availability. I’m in grad school right now and we both work long hours so our schedules are very tight. We are planning our wedding in less than a year, what would be considered a short time to some brides. So, I was a bit stressed out regarding availability, especially since it was less than the standard 2 years in advance. It was very difficult to arrange meetings with our vendors since our schedules are so opposite, but we are trying to make it work.

What has been the biggest surprise of the engagement process?
People always say that planning a wedding is very difficult and it really tests the relationship. We still have a ways to go, but so far it’s been smooth sailing. We are in agreement on budget and what we both want. Well, ask me this again when we are working on the seating chart!

What is something you would want all future brides to know?
I know it sounds cliché, but remember the wedding is not about the party, it’s about spending the rest of your life with someone. Don’t start your marriage off with a mountain of debt from your wedding. You might find that you think you need that awesome band to make your wedding perfect. If it’s out of your budget, let it go. You don’t need it. You will see it’s so easy to splurge a little here and there, before you know it you and your new husband will be in over your heads. Try to always remember that your wedding is a celebration of your new life with someone you love, and that’s all that matters.

Not everyone is lucky enough to fall in love at first sight like Kristen and Tony did. This couple proves that no matter where you are, if your love is meant to be, it will happen! Kristen’s advice about remaining available throughout the wedding planning process is a great tip for any woman who may be stretching herself too thin during this crazy time in her life. If you and your fiancé remember to spend time together, respect each other’s needs, and take the planning process in stride, you’ll be sure to get through anything life has in store for you together.

How perfect was Tony’s proposal? I love the idea of proposing in one of the most iconic locations in the world, and still having a proposal that was intimate and all about Kristen and Tony. New York City emits a certain romantic charm during the holiday season that is very hard to describe to non-New Yorkers. The city’s rich brownstones, bare trees, and snow covered streets are illuminated by the warm glow of Christmas lights, and the entire city seems to sparkle with love. Getting engaged in New York City at Christmastime is like no other romantic feat imaginable. The extra warmth and coziness of New York City during the holiday season added extra romance to the already charming proposal that Tony had planned. Props to Tony for ensuring that the couple had a photographer to capture the magic moment as it was happening! Men take note – having someone capture the moment you become engaged is priceless, just don’t make your proposal too public if you know your girlfriend wouldn’t like that.
